Bolt Non-DEstructive Testing

As underground mines become more geotechnically challenging with increasing depth and excavation size, the requirements for ground support to be installed as per design becomes more critical. Current methods to manage installation quality have limitations; pull testing of encapsulated bolt is largely inconclusive with only extremely poor installation being identifiable. Audits during installation can only capture a small percentage of installed bolts.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods are a viable solution to the this problem.

MCIT's internationally sourced, NDT equipment can measure the bolt length, as well as provide a qualitative assessment of encapsulation quality.

It can be used for cable bolts, solid bar bolts and SDA bolts installed with either cement or resin grouts. The data can be used as a check on installation quality or an assessment of bolt damage following rock mass movement.
